A continuous assay using internally quenched fluorescent peptides with the general sequence Abz-peptidyl-(Dnp)P-OH (Abz = ortho-aminobenzoic acid; Dnp = 2,4-dinitrophenyl) was optimized for the measurement of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) in human plasma and rat tissues. Abz-FRK(Dnp)P-OH, which was cleaved at the Arg-Lys bond by ACE, was used for the enzyme evaluation in human plasma. Enzymatic activity was monitored by continuous recording of the fluorescence (lambdaex = 320 nm and lambdaem = 420 nm) at 37ºC, in 0.1 M Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.0, with 50 mM NaCl and 10 µM ZnCl2. The assays can be performed directly in the cuvette of the fluorimeter and the hydrolysis followed for 5 to 10 min. ACE measurements in the plasma of 80 healthy patients with... |

We determined the frequency of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative enteric bacteria (GNEB) in pneumonia patients, determined the antibiograms of these pathogens, and investigated the relationship between pneumonia and selected risk factors. Sputum and demographic data were collected from 124 pneumonia patients. Sputum was cultured for S. aureus, GNEB, H. influenzae and S. pneumoniae. The disc diffusion method was used to determine resistance to eight antimicrobial agents. Among the 124 sputum samples, eight (6.5%) were positive for S. aureus, 15 (12.1%) for GNEB, two (1.6%) for S. pneumoniae and one (0.8%) for H. influenzae. Hospitals, gender, ethnicity, co-morbidities and symptoms did not... |

The study presents an analysis of the coordination between the cassava's producers and the cassava's processors industry located in the west of State of Parana (Brazil). In a few years this chain became dynamics because of many factors, such as the institutional that is the most important one. In the last years it was verified a large volatility in cassava's production and price, that compromised the chain performance, mainly the cassava's starch modified production and price, which has high aggregate value. One of this oscillations cause, among other reasons was the lack of coordination between agents. To find evidences and solutions to the studies answers, the new institutional economy approach was studied. Three cassava's starch industries were analyzed... |

The paper aims to present possible development visions for the rural areas in a candidate country to access the EU. The proposed objective is to provide a decision-making tool useful in strategic planning process, by designing models of integrated rural development, applicable at country or regional levels. The scenarios method was used to conceive alternatives for rural development and design scenario matrices, focusing on the institutional and socio-economic modules of analysis. The paper proposes a trend scenario, based on the potentials and constraints identified in the analysis phase, and 3 goal scenarios, based on distinctly different sets of goals or development visions. The expected outcome consists in development of the potential for economic... |

As part of developing an international network of community-based ecosystem approaches to health, a project was undertaken in a densely populated and socio-economically diverse area of Kathmandu, Nepal. Drawing on hundreds of pages of narrative reports based on surveys, interviews, secondary data, and focus groups by trained Nepalese facilitators, the authors created systemic depictions of relationships between multiple stakeholder groups, ecosystem health, and human health. These were then combined to examine interactions among stakeholders, activities, concerns, perceived needs, and resource states (ecosystem health indicators). These qualitative models have provided useful heuristics for both community members and research scholars to understand the... |

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international initiative that aims to enable the worldwide exchange of biodiversity-related data through the internet. Within a three year project funded as a German contribution to GBIF the information about primary types of birds (and other vertebrates) in German collections will be made available through the internet (http://www.gbif.de). This information includes the original description, status (syntypes, holotypes, etc.), current taxonomic classification, collecting data, mode of preparation, current location as well as digital images of type specimens. So far, 900 of the expected 4000 primary type taxa of birds have been investigated and digitised. It is expected that by the end of the... |

The point of interest in this work is the dynamics of the small property through a filière analysis, identifying the internal and external relationships by the aggregation of value in each chain, besides calculating its contribution to the total value aggregation. Seeking to obtaining results, a case study was carried out and an input-product matrix was structured, using production values of a small property (12 ha). As a result, the property was found to be inserted in three filières (soy, milk and swine production), demonstrating the characteristic change of self-sufficiency for the integration in production chains. In the value aggregation (of total production) originating from the property (R$ 3.044.570), resulting in a final product of R$ 1.278.925,... |
